Event Overview
The United Nations Association (UNA), San Fernando Valley Chapter, celebrated Human Rights Day – Creating Immigrant Pathways with a virtual event on December 10, 2024. The event highlighted legal immigration pathways and the diversity and contributions of immigrant communities in the United States.
Chapter President David Tuckman opened the program, welcoming attendees and encouraging participation in UNA initiatives. Ginny Hatfield introduced the first guest speaker, Carl Shusterman, and Dr. Soraya Fallah introduced the second speaker, Stephanie Dinh. They all emphasized that the right to dignity, equality, and opportunity should belong to everyone—regardless of where they come from or their immigration status. Over 100 participants attended, including community members, educators, and students, engaging in meaningful dialogue about human rights and immigration.
Guest Speakers
Carl Shusterman
As a seasoned immigration attorney and former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) trial attorney, Carl Shusterman shared his expertise on navigating legal immigration systems. He discussed family-based, employment-based, and humanitarian immigration processes, as well as the challenges immigrants face. His practical solutions and advocacy for policy reform resonated strongly with attendees.
Stephanie Dinh
Stephanie Dinh, a high school senior and co-founder of Creating Legal Immigration Pathways (CLIP), inspired attendees with her work to support immigrants. She detailed her efforts to translate educational materials, develop workshops, and promote equitable access to legal pathways.
